Coleus forskohlii, which is commonly known as Forskolin, is a member of the mint family and indigenous to Ayurvedic Medicine. It is a perennial herb with fleshy, fibrous roots that grows wild in the warm subtropical temperate areas in India, Burma and Thailand. In recent years, Coleus forskohlii has gained recognition as the only known plant source of the diterpene, Forskolin, an adenylate cyclase activator, an enzyme involved in the production of Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate (cAMP). Cyclic AMP induces a chain of biochemical events that trigger metabolic processes and diet induced thermogenesis, thereby providing the means to maintain a healthy body composition and lean body mass level.
Forskolin is found in the roots of an herbal plant from the mint family. Researchers have found that forskolin can help to promote the breakdown of stored fats in animal and human fat cells. It may also release fatty acids from adipose tissue, which results in increased thermogenesis, resulting in loss of body fat and, theoretically, increased lean body mass.
